Coastal regions are among the most densely-populated areas of the world and host some of the world’s largest cities. This is exemplified by Australia, where the majority of the population is concentrated in a number of urban centres near the coast.
Coastal zones are also home to productive agricultural areas, and form attractive tourist destinations. As such there is a high demand for freshwater. While coastal areas experience similar water management challenges as inland areas, an additional complication is formed by the risk of salinization due to the vicinity of the sea. The projected increased water demand in many areas, combined with the uncertain challenges of future environmental change, call for innovative groundwater management approaches.
From 28 November to 1 December, Flinders University in Adelaide will host an international workshop on solutions for water supply in coastal zones. This workshop is organized together with the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) from Germany, and is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
