The controversy about fracking continues unabated around Australia. Two speakers will shed some light on the fracking process and the risks to groundwater resources with special reference to the South East, SA.

The presentation will cover:

  • The regulatory framework under which petroleum exploration and development, including unconventional oil and gas, is administered under in South Australia.
  • How the IESC is engaged in this process in relation to any CSG project proposal in South Australia.
  • Some of the key issues of concern raised by various stakeholders in relation to unconventional oil and gas development and how they are addressed.
  • The petroleum prospectivity of the Otway Basin, South Australia.
  • Current and proposed water research projects in the South East.
  • Finally, will give an update on the status of unconventional gas exploration in the South East of South Australia.

Michael Malavazos, Energy Resource Division, Department of State Development

Brief Biography

Michael graduated in Chemical Engineering from the University of Adelaide and has a Master’s degree in Public Policy and Management from the Flinders University of South Australia. He has over 25 years’ experience in the oil and gas industry covering many aspects of the industry including reservoir engineering, tight gas, EOR, drilling and well operations, high pressure pipeline transmission and facility engineering with a focus on process safety and integrity management. His current position is Director Engineering Operations in the Energy Resources Division within the Department of State Development.

Tony Hill, Energy Resource Division, Department of State Development

Brief Biography

Tony Hill graduated with a BSc in Applied Geology from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 1980.  He has over 30 years experience in petroleum system analysis and has also worked in the fields of hydrogeology and geothermal energy. He is currently Principal Geologist within the Energy Resources Division of the South Australian Department of State Development (DSD) and is a member of PESA.
