NCGRT is collaborating with eWater to introduce the various components of Groundwater/Surface Water interaction in Source.
eWater Source is a model designed to analyse and manage the water resources of rivers and catchments where the available water is from the rivers and connected groundwater systems. It is the government endorsed, National Hydrological Modelling Platform. Source contains several modules which allow for calculation of the stream-aquifer interaction and impacts on the connected aquifer systems at a range of spatial and temporal scales. Source also allows for unconnected Groundwater to be recognised as a water resource for conjunctive use without volume restriction.
This three-day course will introduce participants to the various scales of stream – aquifer interaction modelling available in Source, including:
* GWSWIT - the analytical groundwater flow tool for modelling the effects of pumping and recharge
* The new numerical groundwater model, a 1-D finite difference solver including floodplain recharge processes
Practical applications of groundwater modelling in Source will be demonstrated using examples from a real-world case study.

Will introduce participants to Source’s functionality and the user interface. By the end of the first day, participants will be able to
• Understand the theoretical concepts underpinning Source and outline the general modelling capabilities of Source.
• Describe the node-link structure of all Source scenarios, describe the similarities and differences between Source schematic and geographic scenarios, and their appropriate applications
• Navigate around Source’s various screens, panels and toolbars
• Construct a model from nodes and links
• Edit and parameterise a node model, record elements, and configure and run a scenario
• View scenario outputs in graph, table and statistical formats
Will provide an overview of the groundwater modelling tools available in Source, including their conceptual basis and limitations. By the end of the second day, participants will be able to
• Choose an appropriate groundwater model considering project objectives and data availability
• Set up and configure an Analytical Groundwater Model on a river link, including configuring flux input, groundwater head, unsaturated connection and saturated connection models
• Set up and configure a Numerical Groundwater Model on a river link, including connecting diffuse recharge sources, extraction points and water users
Will discuss model calibration, and explore practical applications of Source's groundwater tools using a real world case study. The case study will include:
• Advanced techniques in data preparation, model configuration and model calibration
• Insights from a comparison of Source with other groundwater modelling packages
If time allows, we will discuss options for customising the Source framework and potential future directions of groundwater modelling in Source.
The Source Groundwater training is aimed at professionals across a wide range of government and private sectors who have an interest in evaluating groundwater/surfacewater interactions for their impact on river and stream flows for example in relation to CSG licensing, Environmental Flows or Conjunctive use studies.
