Introduction to Contaminant Hydrogeology - Presented by ALGA/NCGRT

The National Centre for Groundwater Research and Training has partnered with the Australasian Land & Groundwater Association to present this online course is an Introduction to Contaminant Hydrogeology. Contaminant Hydrogeology draws on principles of hydrogeology and hydrochemistry. Accordingly, we will firstly explore all hydrogeological principles which affect solute transport, including hydrogeological site conditions (aquifers, aquitards, flow systems and their boundaries) and their influence on advective groundwater velocities. This is followed by discussions of solute transport by advection, dispersion and diffusion and how different site subsurface settings, such as porous media versus fractured rock environments influence solute transport.

After these hydrogeological fundamentals, the course will discuss the chemical processes affecting solute transport. This includes sorption reactions and resulting retardation of contaminants, degradation processes such as redox reactions and microbially mediated transformations. We introduce analytical and numerical model approaches, frequently used in industry to quantify transport velocities and concentrations in groundwater systems.

Numerous hands-on exercises will be used to facilitate learning, including example models of LNAPL plume monitoring and prediction of plume movement at a theoretical contaminant site.
