Hydrochemistry

Description

The next 10-week delivery block opens in March 2027. If you would like to register your interest, please click "Register your interest now!" above.

Overview

Hydrochemistry is a key component of groundwater hydrology, as water quality is a critical aspect of water resource management. Knowledge of water quality and the chemical processes that control it is essential for understanding and managing groundwater systems.

This course provides a sound foundation in aquatic chemistry, hydrochemical processes, and their applications in hydrology. Course materials are organised into three major themes:

1. Fundamentals of aquatic chemistry

  • Basic nomenclature
  • Concentration units
  • Composition of natural waters
  • Chemical reactions
  • Equilibrium chemistry
  • Chemical kinetics

2. Chemical processes in natural waters

  • Carbonate systems
  • Sorption processes
  • Redox reactions
  • Mixing
  • Evaporation

3. Applications in groundwater hydrology

  • Chemical tracers
  • Isotope hydrology
  • Nutrients
  • Solute transport

Delivery Format

This course is delivered online and on demand during designated enrolment periods, allowing participants to learn at their own pace. Each delivery block includes an opportunity to participate in a live online tutoring session with expert staff.

Target Audience

Suitable for hydrogeologists, hydrologists, environmental scientists, geologists, water resource professionals, consultants, regulators and postgraduate students interested in groundwater chemistry and water quality.
