WHY IS THIS COURSE IMPORTANT?
Groundwater is the lifeblood of the Northern Territory. Almost 90% of the water used in the Northern Territory is groundwater, and both human activities and natural ecosystems rely heavily on groundwater availability. In many areas – particularly outback communities and arid zones – groundwater is the only reliable source of water, and may keep streams flowing and ecosystems alive during the dry season. 
In the Darwin region, groundwater supplies around 10% of Darwin’s public water supply, and more broadly, in developed areas in the Darwin Harbour catchment, groundwater levels at the end of the dry season have lowered between 6 and 10 metres over the last 20 years.

This one day course is designed for those who require a basic understanding of the role of groundwater, and an overview of the types of aquifers common to the Northern Territory. This course will also incorporate an understanding of risks to groundwater and provide a brief introduction to unconventional gas and fraccing. WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Water managers, professionals working in or interested in the area of community environmental management, miners, farmers and landholders will find this course relevant. No hydrogeological knowledge will be assumed. 

WHO IS PRESENTING?
A mix of presenters from government agencies, consultancies and academia who are currently practicing consultants and hydrogeologists.
